The massive new protests in Iran, explained

At least 20 people have died, and the protests show no signs of stopping.

Iran is being rocked by its biggest wave of protests in nearly a decade. Since December 28, tens of thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets in huge numbers of towns and cities to demand freedom from their theocratic government. At least 20 people have since been killed in clashes with security forces, and hundreds of mostly young people have been arrested, per news reports.

The demonstrations began as small gatherings protesting a slow economy in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city; over the past week they’ve morphed into a wave of major demonstrations in which ordinary Iranians are often heard calling for a revolution against the country’s theocratic government.

But this massive movement — one with the potential to reshape the Middle East — has a pretty mundane cause.

“It started over a protest over the price of eggs, believe it or not,” says Hussein Banai, a professor at Indiana University who studies Iran.

What No One Is Telling You About Iran

“CNN and The New York Times did a terrible job of covering the protests, while ABC News’ Matthew Dowd declared that the U.S. did not have the moral authority to talk about Iran because ‘we’ don’t talk about Russia.”

So, again, the liberal media has been taken to task for its unfair coverage of the Iranian protests, and rightly so. In fact, it would be hard to find a greater contrast than that between the courageous protesters and the cowardly media.

But there’s something else going on in Iran that could well be playing an important role in the rising Iranian discontent.

It’s something that has been building and growing under the surface and behind closed doors. And it remains one of the best kept secrets in the world, despite occasional media reports in the last few years: Iranian Muslims are converting to Christianity at an unprecedented pace, perhaps by the thousands every day.

I’ve heard this firsthand from Iranian converts. I’ve heard it firsthand from Christian leaders who have worked with these converts inside and outside of Iran. And I’ve heard it from missiologists whose job it is to track such things.

Iran’s Attorney General Blames Israel-CIA for Nationwide Protests

Iranian Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri claimed that the CIA, aided by intelligence support from Israel and financing from Saudi Arabia, is behind the nationwide protests against the regime.

In an interview with the state-run news agency IRNA, Montazeri said the CIA received help from exiled Iranian groups and planned to turn the protest into an “armed” insurrection by mid-February, the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Hundreds were arrested and 21 were killed in a week of protests that tapered off on Thursday.

A senior Trump administration official disputed any US role in the protests, saying it had not expected them to occur.

“The protests were entirely spontaneously generated,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

The Iranian people have taken to the streets in the past week to protest Iran’s dictatorial regime and the repressive financial state in which the Iranian citizens live.

The protests began because of the weak economy, unemployment and a jump in food prices. They have expanded to cities and towns in nearly every province. Hundreds have been arrested, and a prominent judge warned that some could face the death penalty.
