I wonder when we will have another big one in New Zealand too. Wellington particularly is likely to get one at some point.

Tony with all the articles coming out about the San Adreas Fault and the BIG ONE coming here in California, I feel like I am just waiting any minute for it…not a good way to live.

Who knows though – it could be days, weeks, months or years away – who knows. But it is a ticking time bomb for California that will go bang at some point!

It’s not just California that could be hit- NZ potentially too

‘Megathrust’ earthquake & devastating tsunami could hit New Zealand, scientists warn

New Zealand could be potentially hit by a massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake followed by a “towering” tsunami, scientists warn. According to the researchers, a 2016 quake that hit the area reawakened a hazardous fault that was believed to be dormant.
The Hikurangi subduction zone – a deep trench in the Earth’s crust running along the eastern shore of New Zealand’s North Island – is now active and could trigger magnitude 8.5 earthquakes, which would be far more devastating that the one that hit the islands in 2016, a group of scientists from the GNS research institute warn. The earthquakes are also likely to be followed by tsunamis that could reach New Zealand’s coast within mere minutes, the geologists add.

“We need to think Japan 2011, basically, because if our whole plate boundary ruptured, it would be a magnitude 9 earthquake,” Ursula Cochran, an earthquake geologist at the GNS, told the local media. “The Hikurangi subduction zone is potentially the largest source of earthquake and tsunami hazard in New Zealand, but there is still much to learn about it,” GNS Science said in a statement earlier.

MY only experience with Texas is Houston airport earlier this year and the 2 hours it took to get through customs so I missed my connecting flight check in by 5 minutes and had to sit in the airport for an extra 5 hours lol. It was ok flying out though.

Honestly- who really knows when California or NZ will get hit with a big quake? It could be minutes or it could be years away. I don’t really buy into the “imminent” stuff!

It’s the start of summer here in New Zealand and the weather is beautiful. I am kind of hoping that I can get back to the USA for a couple or three weeks in March or April 2018 after our summer is over…and hope I have better luck with Houston customs next time lol. But whether I will actually be able to do it at this stage I don’t know.

What was the hold-up with customs? Does it always take that long or were there just a lot of people?

I vaguely remember going through customs when coming back from a cruise a long time ago, but it wasn’t that long of a wait. No more than the time it takes to go through security at an airport. Maybe because I’m a US citizen? Or maybe the cruise ship companies have some sort of agreement to get their passengers through more quickly? Just curious. 🙂

I don’t know much about New Zealand other than I remember a show called “Flight of the Conchords” and the 2 main characters were supposed to be from New Zealand. I was fascinated by it b/c it was so bizarre, lol! Also, my customer service rep (Lester Nazer) at the place where I get my vehicle serviced is from New Zealand! I pegged his accent based upon that show immediately. Isn’t it interesting all the little connections once you start thinking about it.

I don’t know what is normal for Houston, but there were lots of people and it was just loads of time waiting to actually get through customs at the airport. The actual customs checkout didn’t take long- it was just the ridiculous queques that made it take so long.

Yes the Flight of the Conchords – those two guys were New Zealanders. NZ is a beautiful country, with awesome scenery. Great place for people that like to do outdoor pursuits. All the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed here. Our climate is mild temperate. In other words- most places here don’t get extreme heat in summer or extreme cold in winter. When I flew over to the US in March I sat next to a guy in his late 20’s who was from rural Texas. He had just spent a month in NZ, and loved it so much he was planning to make the trip again next year.

Yeah we are prone to have earthquakes, and we do have volcanoes…..some of our most renowned tourist attraction ski fields are on volcanoes. Lake Taupo is an enormous lake sitting on a super volcano. But it last erupted over 1800 years ago.

Seismologists and geoscientists are warning that New Zealand should prepare for a “the big one”, a massive earthquake that could reach magnitude 9.0 or higher. New Zealand was already hit by a massive earthquake around this time last year, the Kaikoura earthquake, but that quake registered only 7.8M. Despite the sheer power of the quake luckily only a few people were killed or injured. Yet researchers have asked the New Zealand public to remain vigilant and prepare for a quake that could be much more powerful.

                          A 9.0 Magnitude Earthquake

Earthquakes are rated on a logarithmic scale. This means that although the Kaikoura earthquake which occurred last year was a 7.8, and another earthquake in New Zealand (the Christchurch earthquake of 2011) was a 6.3, the Kaikoura earthquake actually released approximately 180 times as much energy as the 2011 quake. The 9.0 earthquake that scientists are warning about could be 11,000 times as powerful as the Christchurch quake.

It should be noted that these magnitudes are not on the Richter scale, a system of calculating earthquake intensity that was used for much of the 20th century. The Richter scale was actually abandoned by seismologists because it worked primarily on earthquakes which occurred in California, and was of little use when trying to measure intense quakes like the magnitude 9 quake that hit Japan in 2011. Seismologists now use a new system called the “momentum magnitude scale”, which can detect quakes on the other side of the Earth.

New Zealand is not the only area of the world that should be concerned about the possibility of intense earthquakes. The warning about New Zeland’s earthquake troubles comes only a couple weeks after a report was published in Nature Geoscience that implied the Cascadia Subduction Zone, located along the coast of Washington and Oregon, could rupture again and sooner than most scientists expected. Furthermore, the fault line is also more likely to generate a more massive quake than many researchers expected.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is almost 1000 km or 620 miles long and it is currently being jammed under the North American plate. This makes the subduction zone a thrust fault like the New Zealand plate, capable of producing similar damage. The energy this fault generates cannot release itself due to a massive sediment band which sits over the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate. The sediment is acting as a wedge between the two plates and preventing the subduction zone from releasing stress.

With that in mind, what are the odds of Yellowstone blowing it’s top?

“I think the odds of a supereruption in our lifetime, in our children’s lifetimes, in our grandchildren’s lifetimes are astronomically small. I couldn’t even quantify it, it’s not something I’m worried about.”

“I find it strange that Yellowstone is the volcano that’s ‘going to doom humanity.’ One of the things that bothers me about that is that there have been super eruptions when humans have been on the planet. There’ve been two and, in fact, both of those were larger than the last Yellowstone eruption. There was one about 74,000 years ago from Indonesia and there was one 27,000 years ago from New Zealand. Both of those were larger than the last eruption at Yellowstone and humanity survived.”
