SMH, thinking of my situation now and I’m trying to regain my composure before describing my workplace fun with a millennial…deep breaths…OK, ready to proceed.
I used to work in the pharma industry (12 years). First sales, then corporate training manager, and last position was a district manager, so a lot of experience hiring. Let me just say that I hated it but the money was good. Yes, it was before I was truly saved and gave my life to Jesus.
The stress was enormous so I left and now I manage a small business and I have 2 bosses. We needed some office help and one of my bosses proposed his son (yep, the millennial) whose only experience was working in a sandwich shop. First red flag. We had him come in 1 day per week to do some filing – which he didn’t even know how to do!! Second red flag. Deep breaths…deep breaths…
At some point I proposed to my bosses that we needed to bring someone on part-time to help and I had in mind placing an add for someone with office experience. However, both bosses presented the idea of the millennial/bosses son for the position at least 2x to me. Both times I said “no” and described his lack of skills, poor attitude, and unwillingness to learn without getting defensive. I’d hired enough people to know he would be an enormous challenge.
Well, they hired him anyway for waaaaayyy more salary than the position would ever earn in the marketplace, especially with no experience or college education, and full-time!
The only one who hasn’t regretted the decision is the boss/father and I have my suspicions that he’s regretted it a time or two. Sometimes it’s like I’m working with a spoiled alien who just doesn’t grasp how the world works. Fortunately, I get to work from home a lot so I guess it all evens out.
I think it’s God’s way of teaching me patience with those who aren’t like me, LOL
