Egg-themed event in New Zealand rethought after offending vegans

Organisers of an egg-themed street event have binned the concept following a hard-boiled reaction from the vegan community.

The Let’s Egg Cuba Street! place-making event in Palmerston North next week was to feature a giant fried egg mural at the corner of Cuba Lombard streets. The public was encouraged to pick up a paint brush and pitch in.

But following criticism that the egg theme endorses inappropriate practices in the poultry industry, the event’s organisers, Palmerston North City Council and Sublime Coffee, have cracked. The intersection will be painted with inoffensive polka dots instead.
