Dozens Suffocate in Syria as Government Is Accused of Chemical Attack

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Dozens of Syrians choked to death after a suspected chemical attack struck the rebel-held suburb of Douma, east of Damascus, with aid groups on Sunday blaming President Bashar al-Assad’s government for the assault and Western governments expressing outrage.

Rescue workers in Syria reported finding at least 42 people dead in their homes from apparent suffocation, and antigovernment activists circulated videos of lifeless men, women and children sprawled out on floors and in stairwells, many with white foam coming from their mouths and nostrils.

A stream of patients with burning eyes and breathing problems were rushed to clinics after the attack at dusk on Saturday, medical and rescue groups said.

BREAKING: ‘AIRSTRIKE on Syria’ – At least ’12 DEAD’ as ‘MILITARY airfield HIT’

EXPLOSIONS have been heard at Syria’s Tiyas Military Airbase (T4) amid reports of jets flying across Lebanon into Syria as well as unknown projectiles which are possibly cruise missiles, it has been reported.

Reports are not confirmed so far, but video has emerged showing an unknown object flying across the sky in Lebanon.

One Twitter user said: “We’re already under attack at this very moment!”

Another said: “USA launches widespread assault on SyAF infrastructure. Warships are now positioning to launch tomahawks in the second wave of attacks.”

At least 12 Syrian troops are said to have been hurt in the attack 30 injured.

There are also reports that US warships from the Mediterranean are reportedly launching tomahawk missiles into Syria.

The day before yesterday as I waited in an interminably long line at TSA security at Houston airport, waiting to fly back to NZ, I got talking to a Syrian standing in the line. He has lived in the USA since 2001. He was on his way back to visit his mother in Syria, via Istanbul and Beirut. I said to him that none of those places are anywhere I would like to go. He nodded his head. I asked him about Syria, and he said that where his mother lives there is not much happening- it’s pretty quiet in that part of the country. But since he can no longer fly to Damascus, he now has to drive from Beirut. He said- well let’s hope that WWIII doesn’t start in Syria. I can’t help but feel that I am glad it was me heading to NZ, and him going to Syria, rather than the other way around- specially after what’s happened there in the last day or so!
