Should We as Christians Be Taking These Things More Seriously?

Introduction.
This is a follow-up article as promised on the subject of Cryptids, it will not be as extensive as the article on Sasquatch, it will be a much more general and focused look at Cryptids, never the less it will carry the same message. I will write this article in two parts as there is a need keep it to a reasonable and readable size. I am going to use a reverse order of presentation on Cryptids compared to my articles on Sasquatch, in the four part Sasquatch series I started by describing Sasquatch and then gave my thoughts and concerns from a Biblical perspective. In this article I will start with my thoughts and concerns on Cryptids from a Biblical perspective (and my brush with the demonic), then go into descriptions of some of the more common cryptids and how they may be of some concern from a supernatural and paranormal aspect.
In writing this article, I do not want to in any way want to detract from the importance of understanding the true nature of these creatures from a Biblical perspective, in my opinion it is vital that Christians are informed on this subject without having to be enmeshed in an actual engagement and pursuit of these creatures, and there is a clear difference between being informed on, or being engaged with or actively researching Cryptids. As I described in my articles on Sasquatch, there is a clear danger in actively pursuing these creatures, I hope that you the reader will gain an understanding of the true nature of Cryptids as we take our journey into this strange world.
Cryptids – What Are They?
As mentioned in my first of four articles on Sasquatch, Cryptids are creatures that have been reported by people but have never been proven to exist. Cryptids fall in to two categories, Terrestrial Cryptids and Aquatic Cryptids, there may be arguably a third category of Avian Cryptids such as Thunderbirds often referred to in North American Indian mythology, perhaps even the Mothman may fall into this category also. I have already gone into great detail on Sasquatch, which is probably the most well-known of the Cryptid family, so I will not get into too much detail on this creature, you will find much information on Sasquatch in the four articles I wrote; 1,2,3,4.
There is a great deal of information on Sasquatch, with both anecdotal and circumstantial evidence. Far less is known about other reported Cryptids, although there are some that are becoming more widely known and researched such as the Dogman and the Goatman (this may be something like the Satyr I mentioned in Sasquatch article 3). It might be reasonable to assume that many Cryptids are creatures of myth and legend, born of fertile imaginations, or tales told to warn children that if they are not well behaved the bogeyman will get them. These creatures may be inventions of necessity from primitive to more advanced theocratic cultures to keep populations subservient to ruling priest classes, the threat that demonic monsters would be unleashed to punish or kill those that dared to disobey.
Literature and art from various ancient cultures are littered with accounts and depictions of monstrous, demonic and dark entities. Academia largely views these as myths and legends, but is it possible that some of the people of these ancient cultures were describing what they actually witnessed? As a Christian who views the world from a supernatural perspective, many of these creatures may be “something else”, and that “something else” is what I am here to explore with you!!
Biblical Cryptids.
To the secular mind, Cryptids may well be just myths, fairytales and pure nonsense. However, to those that believe in the supernatural, these creatures may be the inhabitants of another world or dimension. Cryptids may also be animals thought to be extinct, or yet undiscovered species. If you are a Bible believing Christian, the Old Testament tells us of accounts of giants, both pre-flood in Genesis 6 and post flood in the accounts of the Israelites coming into the Promised Land of Israel and of Goliath, the Philistine giant, descendant of the Rephaim giants of Canaan.
There is also mention of several strange creatures that could be considered Cryptids by our current definition. The Satyrof Isaiah 13:21, Isaiah 34:14 and Leviticus 17:7, a half man half goat. The Lion Men of Moab mentioned in 2 Samuel 23:20 that may have had the countenance of lions, we know that they were not literal lions as Benaiah mentioned in 2 Samuel, went on to kill a lion after he had killed these Lion Men.
The Bible also mentions a number of strange and supernatural creatures. In Joel 2:1-10 there is an account of God using an army of horse-like creatures. Revelation 9:1-11 describes again strange creatures that come out of the Abyss. Here is the description straight from scripture;
“3 Then out of the smoke came locusts [a]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And [b]they were not permitted to kill [c]anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it [d]stings a person. 6 And in those days people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death [e]will flee from them!
7 The [f]appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. 8 They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their power to hurt people for five months.”
If you saw one of these creatures described in Revelation 9 in a forest or wilderness area near your home, a winged locust-like creature with a crown of gold and human face, with long hair, an iron breastplate and a tail like a scorpion, what would you be thinking you had seen? From my own reading on Cryptids, they could fit in part with accounts of some of the bizarre creatures described by Cryptozoologists.
The Danger of the Demonic Realm And The Satanic Forces That Are Our Real Enemy.
Bible believing Christians understand that there is a supernatural realm, the supernatural realm should be a normal part of our thinking, it is something beyond what we will normally see in our physical realm. It is where God and His angels’ dwell. God has also been very clear that we do not attempt to delve into that realm in terms of trying to make contact with spirits or entities in that realm. This is called necromancy.
In Deuteronomy 18:9-14, God clearly states that we are to have nothing to do with spiritism, contacting the spirit world, witchcraft, divination, casting spells etc. These were the practices of those that inhabited Canaan, the ones that God asked the Israelites to eradicate from the promised land. These peoples were without doubt satanic and demonic in their lineage and practices. These things were very clearly in complete opposition to God and His people.
Ephesians 6:10-17 tells us that we do not battle against flesh and blood, but “against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places”. Paul goes on to describe how we may “stand firm against the schemes of the devil”, he gives us a clear picture of the full armour of God which will enable us to stand firm against and resist spiritual wickedness and evil. The previous link from the “Got Questions” website on “the full armour of God” gives a very good commentary on this portion of Ephesians 6.
If you’ve ever had an unintended brush with demonic spirits (if you are Christian or not), it’s not something you will forget easily. There is a passage in Job 4 specifically Job 4:12-16 that seems to describe in detail a brush with an evil spirit at night.
Matt’s Encounters With Demonic Entities.
As a small boy aged 3 to 4 years old I would wake during the night to sense that there was something malevolent in the dark corner of my room. This thing, whatever it was, filled me with a great sense of terror, I was absolutely paralysed in my bed, I could not move and I even had trouble breathing. Eventually I would muster the courage to call out to my parents who slept in the room next to mine, they would wake and reassure me that things were okay and the terror would subside and I would fall back to sleep. This happened quite a few times and I never told my parents what had caused me to cry out. As I grew older, this night terror faded, but I never forgot the feeling of the absolute terror and dread that I felt on those nights. Later in life I realised that there had been a demonic entity in the room causing this terror, and even at the time of these occurrences, at that young age I knew it was evil.
Since that time, as an adult, I’ve had brushes with demonic entities. I would be sitting by myself at night, every other member of the household had been in bed, I would be working on my laptop and there would be a chill, a sense of fear and terror that made the hairs on my arms and the back of my neck stand up. I knew what this was but at that time lacked the understanding of the authority that Jesus has given us as Christians. There was another incident where my daughter was being terrorised by shadow people, every member of the household had encounters with these entities, (even including the dog) and these encounters not only occurred at night, but also during the day, these encounters lasted a week.
The Authority Of Jesus.
A few years after these incidents, I learned the real nature of the authority that Jesus has given us a believers over the demonic. Demonic spirits play dirty, they try to get you when you are most vulnerable, in my case this was during sleep or early waking. In one instance, I had a dream where I met with someone I knew, but I had a sense that there was something wrong with this meeting. The person in my dream tried to seduce me sexually and at that point I realised that it was not this person, it was a demonic entity. I called on the name of Jesus to rebuke this entity and as I awoke, I felt a physical thump on my chest as the demon departed. I have had instances since then where I have been waking to find demonic entities leaning over me in my bed, I have rebuked them in the name of Jesus and they leave immediately.
If we try and deal with these demonic spirits ourselves we are going to end up like the seven sons of Sceva, we cannot deal with these entities by our own power, we will fail, we need the Lord Jesus Christ and his authority to effectively deal with them. Demonic spirits cause nothing but chaos, trouble and enslavement, this is Satan’s purpose for them. Satan hates you and wants nothing more than to destroy you. Satan will deceive you into thinking he is an angel of lightand wants only good for you, but the end result will only be enslavement and ultimately death without Jesus.
In Psalm 91 which deals with “security of the one who trusts in the Lord” there is part of verse 5 that says “You will not be afraid of the terror by night”, often these demonic entities will come at night when most people are vulnerable to their terrorising influence. I now understand that trusting in Jesus and his authority over these entities, will neutralise and destroy, the influence that demonic spirits try to have over Christians. Jesus has given us His authority to deal with these demonic spirits. In Luke 9:1, Matthew 10:1, Mark 3:14-15, Mark 16:17-18, Jesus clearly gave his authority to his disciples to deal with demons (signs will accompany those who have believed), and they joyfully gave testimony to this.
The End Of The Age.
The reality of being a Christian at the end of this age, the time of the birth pangs of Matthew 24, is the burgeoning increase in evil, this is not going to stop until Jesus returns. It is my belief that things are going to get much worse before they get better, so you will need to understand as a Christian, the authority you have in Jesus. As I pointed out in my article on Sasquatch, we are entering a time period that Jesus tells us will be unparalleled in Biblical history. Things are getting bad in the world today, but they are going to get much worse. God destroyed the world and all land creatures with breath in a flood in Genesis 6 and Genesis 7. In Genesis 6 we read that fallen angels came to earth and procreated with the daughters of men, it seemed that this precipitated a massive increase in evil, Satan’s plan to pollute and destroy mankind, to destroy the bloodline that would bring the birth of Jesus, the saviour of mankind. Satan through genetic manipulation defiled humans creating abominations, the Nephilim.
These “fallen ones”, the Nephilim that we read of in Genesis 6, were part angel, part human. God saw that this incursion by the fallen angels created great wickedness, continuous evil, all flesh being corrupted and the earth being filled with violence. Matthew 24:37 and Luke 17:26 tell us that this time period we are entering will be “just” as the days of Noah. If you stick your head out the window and have a look at what is happening in the world, you can see that things are not getting better.
God gives us a heads-up in His word to us, scripture gives us prophetic indications, particular signs that point to coming events. Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 17:22-37 and Luke 21:10-37 deal with these signs or indicators. These passages of scripture are referred to as the Olivet Discourse, this is where Jesus is on the Mount of Olives (interesting prophetically, because this is where he will physically return to earth), Jesus is asked by his disciples “and what will be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?” Jesus starts by saying “See to it that no one misleads you”, clearly this will be a time of great deception. Jesus goes on to list false Christs, wars, rumours of wars, nation rising against nation, kingdom against kingdom, famines, earthquakes, persecution, betrayal, false prophets and lawlessness etc. Can we say that a lot of this is happening now and increasing exponentially? I believe so.
This time period of the “Birth Pangs” is leading to Satan having his day in the sun so to speak, Biblically this is where God will give him a period of time to do his worst with the Antichrist and the false prophet, the unholy trinity. Satan is going to pull out all the stops to try and defeat Jesus and things are going to get seriously apocalyptic for mankind, in a way that it’s never been before. I believe that we as Christians will go through some of this tribulation, but Jesus will rescue us before God pours out His wrath on mankind.
But Matt, I thought we were talking about Cryptids, and haven’t you talked about all this end times stuff before? Yes, I have talked about end times scripture and prophecy, quite a bit and I will keep doing so. “Most Christians are asleep at the wheel”, they have little idea of the time period we are living in. “Satan wants it that way”, he wants nothing more than to have you groping in the dark, confused and deceived, without hope. God wants just the opposite, He wants you walking with him and the Holy Spirit as your guide, He wants you aware of the times that you are living in, and the schemes of the devil. God wants you to have the hope of your rescue and your redemption in Christ Jesus.
As mentioned in my 4th article on Sasquatch, in Revelation 6:7-8, the opening of the fourth seal, the Rider on the Ashen horse, or the Pale horse had the name “Death” on it. In verse 8 this rider will be given the authority to kill with the sword, famine, pestilence and “the wild beasts of the earth”. I would like to reiterate that this is my speculation, it is not a hard and fast fact, it is my opinion. As mentioned in the Sasquatch article, it is possible that these beasts of the earth may be something more than just wild dogs and rabid trash bandits (Raccoons). It is my speculation that they may be creatures that instil fear and terror that will cause men’s hearts to fail them, these wild beasts may be the nightmarish creatures of myth and legend. They may be many of the very creatures we understand as being described as Cryptids.
I will finish this first part of the article here; the second part will deal more specifically with descriptions of the different types of Cryptids and how the reported nature and behaviour of these of these creatures may give away their spiritual identity and origins.
