Chaos is off and running from the very start of this new year of 2025. We had the pickup truck attack on crowds celebrating the new year on Bourbon Street in New Orleans that killed 14 and injured many more, along with the ‘cyber-truck’ bombing outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas. Now, a few days later, we have a new wave of chaos that has already put the events of New Years eve down the memory hole. Because we have wildfires destroying huge swaths of Los Angeles, CA in what I would describe as ‘Lahaina 2.0’. As if the election shootings and destruction unleashed by hurricane Helene toward the end of 2024 on FL, GA, SC and NC were not enough. And what do these all have in common? Chaos …. or KAOS. I will explain that alternate spelling in a bit.
You don’t need to be a keen observer or a sociologist to have noticed the fragility, breakdown and disintegration of people and institutions in our world today. Few would say we live in a calm and stable world where things are heading in ‘the right direction’ and people are flourishing and doing well. The opposite is true almost everywhere you look – there is this general sense of people just being worn out, overwhelmed, frustrated, and downcast. What may have started during the covid lockdowns seems to have become more entrenched where people just seem less and less inclined to gather and even socialize anymore.
